The only difference is one can't be customized and says Developer Edition on the back. Both are unlocked so you can put any rom on it you want.

Maybe. I don't monkey around with that stuff. Explain.

Developer Edition has unlocked bootloaders. From my understanding, rooting and flashing ROMs is easy peasy lemon squeezey.

The non-developer edition has locked bootloaders. My googling shows that it has been rooted, but the steps are a good bit more complex than most phones and is no way near as perfect as other phones. I took a look at the steps/guide and just reading the comments of people messing up their phone or having to spend hours fixing it scares me.

The stuff Koush has been working on is the only reason I would root my phone.

I have to say that the active display on the Moto X is an absolute killer feature that you simply can't appreciate until you use it for a few days.

A better name however would probably be "passive display" since it just doesn't get in the way. The only thing I don't like is you can't manage multiple notifications, but it's not a drawback since you are the same number of steps away from dealing with multiple ones as you would be on any other phone.
