Chrome Address Bar

Post by Quirk »

Chrome stopped showing http:// awhile ago, which is cool. The problem that I am having is that when I copy something from the address bar it prepends http://. Does anyone know of a way to disable this? I want exactly what is displayed to be copied.
In some situations, we’ve stopped displaying “http://” and/or a slash after the hostname. This makes the hostname more prominent and the URL more readable, and provides more visual distinction between regular and SSL websites (which keep their “https://” prefix). We’ve also done a lot of work to make sure that copying and pasting of these URLs continue to work as you would expect.
Apparently they did a lot of work to prevent what you want. Sorry, lol.

if I select the text mm.0x20.org, I expect mm.0x20.org to be in the clipboard, not http://mm.0x20.org/

Why do you care? If it puts http:// there then it technically should be there. If it shouldn't be there (like https://) it shows what should be there (like https://).

It's not like it is going to take someone to the wrong place :-/

it's not a matter of practicality or being "effectively the same thing." it's purely a matter of expecting your computer to behave as it ALWAYS does: it copies the text you've selected precisely as-is. copy-paste functionality is basic and intuitive. if the browser is not exactly copying the text I have selected, the whole concept of copy-paste has been tainted.

I think you are getting a bit excited.

I'm sure Jason's response is going to be he is limited in characters, and doesn't want to remove it by hand - Which is pretty much the only reasonable reason I can come up with being annoyed by it, and even that is a bit far fetched (seeing as every other browser acts the same way).

Actually, this only bothers me at work. I have to search our system by domain name. Here is a scenario.

Customer calls in and says their website is broken. I go to their site and see that it is, copy the domain, and then search our system. Search returns nothing because we don't store http:// and whatnot.
