Home FTP
I am looking for tools that will turn my computer into a FTP server but still have it remain as a desktop. Something that runs in the background. Also sFTP would be a plus.
What do I need to do? I wont be using it for anything more than downloading things from on the fly to my phone or laptop when I am out of town. Maybe have a few friends that can log into it. my IP is static as long as I don't loose power to the modem.
Suggestions?

Re: Home FTP
FTP servers are a pain in the ass to run because they usually require you to open tons of ports. Even if it listens on just one port, it needs you to open a bunch for multi connections to work.

Re: Home FTP
That's what I was afraid of. I am looking for a straight up install and forget kind of server. But I don't think it exists.

I'm pretty nooby in this area. But couldn't Pogoplug do this? what does FTP give you beyond it?

Though I guess this wouldn't use your desktop's harddrive.

Re: Home FTP
I'll second the recommendation for filezilla server. Its a good windows ftp server.
If your on linux tho, thats an entirely different set....

Re: Home FTP
Anytime I set up an FTP server (on Linux) I either use ProFTPd or VSFTPd. Not sure which is better, but they've both worked for me. I have never set up an FTP server on Windows, I've never felt the need to.

Re: Home FTP
I would like to keep it windows based. I want to be able to remote connect to my computer at home where I torrent. So, Maybe I should build a new computer, and then network the current one and then do all my downloading to it and just do everything streaming over the network.

Re: Home FTP
when it comes to torrenting, my favorite setup is with TorrentFlux (http://www.torrentflux.com/). Makes it really easy to set up a seedbox. Sadly, Linux/Unix only.
depending on the resources you have available to your PC, setting up a Linux VM with minimal resources (256mb of RAM should be enough) wouldn't be too terribly hard. Install PHP, MySQL and a Web Server. You could also do this same sort of thing for just an FTP server if you wanted.
