EDI - Electronic Data Interchange system

Post by DoLFaN »

At work so will keep this short.

I just started working for a company as their Operations Manager. We need an EDI system. I don't really have the time to look into it. Do any of you have any suggestions for a company that can provide this for us, or lead us in the right direction? You guys are all smart and experienced individuals, so if you have any experience with an EDI system then PLEASE share what you know.

My boss is cheap, btw.

I have absolutely no idea what type of systems these are. This is the first time I've ever heard this terminology before.

It's a way to keep track of inventory and transactions between two parties. And honestly I hadn't really heard of it before either, but from googling it seems pretty prevalent. We are a supplier of high-end contemporary/modern/trendy table-top products. Glassware, barware, plates, votives, vases, etc. We sell wholesale to hotels for their decor and to retail stores for resale. We are going to partner with an online retailer of home goods. They want to carry our line.

The biggest problem is that we are pretty archaic technology wise. We don't have any CRM (customer relationship management) or ERP (enterprise resource planning) software or systems. We are TINY, less than 20 employees, but we sell hundreds of thousands of product a year. We are WAY understaffed but the president likes it that way as it keeps everyone on their toes.

Basically, instead of mailing paper documents (or even using email) saying "we need this much of this product" we can do it over the interwebs at a much faster and effective speed. And of course this program would do all sorts of fancy calculations and math, and hopefully update our inventory and blah blah. Really, I don't know. I'm definitely in over my head.

Sounds like a perfect situation for Excel. /sarcasm

I wish I could be of some help. If I needed something like this, I would write it myself.

Couldn't you just Google EDI, find one of the companies numbers, and get them to send out a rep?
