I'm powerless. Anyone else?

Post by Jenna »

Random ass out-of-nowhere storm knocked my power out Friday night. Not projected to be restored until Saturday night.

It's hot.

We've got it better than most. Managed to find a generator Sunday morning to keep the fridge running, charge phones, etc. Just hoping gas supply holds out.

Any of my pals in the same boat?

Been there, done that. Is that all the storm did is take out power? Or are you having to deal flooding and trees down and all that fun stuff too? It sucks taking cold showers for a week.

there are about a half million people without power here in Columbus.... I was lucky. Since so many are without power, I've been turning everything I own on, even when not home.

Just doing my part.

From what I gather it was hurricane force winds without any of the standard warning. Trees and lines went down, and I guess several of the grid substations had major damage, so it's kind of a two-fold problem.

I'm lucky in that I live in a development with buried lines, but we're being affected by the substation problems.

It's so hot I actually haven't minded the cold showers yet.

My employer happened to lose power Friday morning, before the storms. Battery backups failed to inform the generators that they were about to die, so the whole data center went down for about 5 hours.

Today, about an hour before I left, parts of the building lost power. Everyone's personal fans were confiscated and moved to the data center. Generators were already going full blast, just in case. The building got pretty warm, pretty quick so I bailed out early. Looks like they're still without power to most of the building.

I live in/near the mountains now, and Friday night I just stood at my bedroom window watching the power go off and on up and down the mountain. (We lost it and regained it several times before it went out for good.)

We lived through several outages in NY... Particularly the big ice storm a few years back that knocked out our power and heat for several days. Now we finally broke down and bought the generator.

Coming to you live from my powered home. Woohoo!

Feeling for the folks that are still without, though.

Not necessarily directed at you, but:

AEP (power company in most of Ohio) said for customers to turn their unnecessary stuff off yesterday afternoon, as their grid was heavily damaged from the storm.

We have an exhaust fan for the third floor which has been off a lot over the past two days. I figured that we could help them out and also turned the AC off for a few hours yesterday afternoon.

Wait... You're in Columbus?

As for turning things off, we have been doing the same and have been just out of the house. I had to work from home the other day because there wasn't enough power at work for everyone to be there.
