Trick or Treat? Beta 3 is here!

Post by John »

If you guessed treat, you're right! Middle_man beta 3 is here, and we have a lot to tell you about it.

The first thing you're probably asking is, "what does it do?" The list is simple folks:
- log IMs (normal, secure, directly connected)
- log chats
- log buddy events (sign on/off, away/back)
- log direct connection files
- log buddy's last profile
- log viewer with search capabilities
- clone AIM
- remove advertisements from the buddy list
- auto-collapse content at the bottom of the buddy list

The second thing you're probably asking is, "wtf, I waited 2 years for this?" Well, it's complicated...

Over the past 2 years, Harry and I have been pretty busy. We both graduated from college at separate times. We both took up full time jobs in different states. And we both had to manage a social life and girlfriends. All of these things put us in a very different situation than when we were working on beta 2. We were no longer able to drive 2 minutes to the other's house and program every night.

With all that said, 2 years and only 3 features? Well, the truth is beta 3 has way more than 3 features... we've just removed them from the code. Why would we do that? A couple of months ago, we realized that we had built up beta 3 in our heads as the be-all-end-all AIM plugin. And no matter how hard we churned out code, the task ahead of us was continually daunting. So we came up with a new strategy. Our new strategy was to start small, with a low expectation, and continually build onto it. And with each release it will be come better and more stable.

Thus, what you're seeing is the beginning of a great AIM plugin. We're recreated the entire code base on a more stable and expandable environment, and we're hoping that middle_man quickly grows to the vision Harry and I had before.

And now that we got that all out of the way, here is the other information you may want to know:
- beta 3 is built to work with AIM 5.9
- beta 3 is built to work on Windows 2000 and XP
- beta 3 is NOT built to work with other plugins
- beta 3 is NOT built to work with a modified version of AIM

Some things to look forward to...
- buddy aliasing
- local / remote commands
- tabbed IMs
- scripting
- window transparency

So, go forth and download! And be sure to start sending in those bug reports!
