BETA 3: Direct Connect Will Not Work On Vista

Post by hmphargh »

Hello, I cannot seem to direct connect with middle_man. If I uninstall it, it works perfectly, but once I reinstall m_m it does not work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling m_m, uninstalling both m_m and aim then reinstalling both, but nothing seems to work.

hmphargh, because you're using Windows Vista, we have no idea if this is the cause of the problem.

Until we begin testing on other operating systems, please stick to the supported ones on the download page or wait until further support is available.

I understand that the operating system may have had a hand in the problems, and had no intention of complaining, I just wanted to inform you. I use m_m regardless of whether or not the direct connections work (if I need to send something there are plenty of other ways). Thank you for your great product.

Could it be an issue with AIM and Vista, not m_m?

So I did some tests with hmphargh and Portfolioso...here are my results

Vista -> Vista
m_m to m_m - works
AIM to m_m - works

Vista -> XP
m_m to m_m - DOES NOT WORK
AIM to m_m - DOES NOT WORK
AIM to AIM - works

Yeah, not entirely sure why...but this is odd...

Matt... in the Vista to XP trials... AIM to m_m... did you do it both ways?

was it m_m on xp and vanilla aim on vista?

this is complete speculation, but what if vista has a way of determining the source of the connection? could it then say "hey, this isn't from an application that matches your application, we're not letting it through"

I did those runs with Port...and for some reason, his firewall was blocking it but didn't that third time. After he fixing it, here are the new results:

Vista -> XP
m_m to m_m - Works
AIM to m_m - Works
m_m to AIM - Works
AIM to AIM - Works

(X to Y == Vista to XP)

So I find no problems now. None whatsoever. Port says he is using Peerguardian which was screwing it up before. I am unsure why, but all tests now confirm that everything works.
